However, many seniors put off going to college because their families can’t afford to send them. This is both unfortunate and unnecessary. There are many unique scholarships for high school seniors available that would allow them to go to school for a far lower cost than they expect or even allow them to go completely for free. These unique scholarships often do not get claimed because students are unaware that they exist.

The first place entry gets $2,000 for college, while the second place entry gets $1,000.

J.D. Salinger Award

High school seniors who dream of writing classic novels may be eligible for the J.D. Salinger Award if they attend Ursinus College, where Salinger went to school. Students must be accepted at Ursinus College to qualify for this award.

The families of many college-bound young women may be worried about how they’re going to pay for school. College students often take out loans or delay going to college altogether because of the high price tag associated with getting a college degree. However, it’s unnecessary to stress out about paying for college because there are many unusual scholarships for girls available. Many of these unusual scholarships remain unclaimed each year because nobody knows about them. If you are a female high school senior or the parent of a daughter is preparing to go to college, try to find random scholarships for girls to help defray the high cost of college education.

Scholarships for Multiples

Twins, triplets and other multiples can get scholarships if all the girls go to the same school. Some random scholarships for girls who are multiples offer one or more of the girls a completely free ride through college, which has the effect of cutting college costs by at least 50 percent. This can help reduce the cost of sending multiple women to college at once.

There are a number of colleges that offer these types of scholarships. Lake Erie College in Ohio and Morris Brown College in Georgia both offer programs where one twin gets in for free if the other twin attends the same college, while George Washington University offers one twin a 50 percent discount if the other twin enrolls in the same school.

Scholarships for Height

Women who are unusual heights may be eligible for random scholarships for girls. Both tall women and short women are eligible for unusual scholarships for girls; women who are over 5’10″ tall may qualify for a scholarship from the Tall Club International. These students simply have to write an essay about how being tall has influenced their lives to qualify for $500 worth of financial aid.

Girls who are shorter than 4’10″ can win a similar scholarship from Little People of America. These unusual scholarships for girls offer up to $1,000 in free financial aid to short girls. Girls who are normal height but have a sister who is unusually short may also qualify for a scholarship from Little People of America.

Dietary Scholarships

Some advocacy groups offer random scholarships for girls who follow particular diets. The Vegetarian Resource Group offers a $1,000 scholarship to students who follow a vegetarian lifestyle and who promote that lifestyle. In order to win these unusual scholarships for girls, applicants must write an essay about how they promote vegetarianism in their schools.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the National Beef Ambassador Program offers a scholarship of $1,000 to a young woman who makes the best public speech about the importance of eating beef.

Unusual Sports Scholarships

Some non-standard sports offer unusual scholarships for girls. Girls who play marbles may be eligible for a scholarship in their freshman year of high school, which can then be used for college when they get old enough. The National Marbles Tournament offers unusual scholarships of $1,000 to $2,000. The girl who wins the tournament gets $2,000, while the one who displays the best sportsmanship gets $1,000.

Girls who bowl may also be eligible for scholarships. Girls who bowl an average of 175 or better may get a scholarship of up to $1,500 from the U.S. Bowling Congress. This organization offers several random scholarships for girls besides the scholarship based on score, including a scholarship for female bowlers whose parents work as emergency personnel or in law enforcement and who need help paying for college.

These unusual scholarships are only a small sample of the random scholarships for girls available throughout the United States. Girls who want to go to college should think about unusual activities they enjoy or facts about themselves that make them unique. If a girl can think of a fact about herself, there’s likely a scholarship available for it from at least one school in the United States.

As we move towards the end of the 2011-2012 school year, many high school seniors are getting acceptance letters from the colleges of their choice. Unfortunately, some seniors may be devastated to learn about the price tag associated with going to their dream schools and may decide not to go or to take out large student loans to fund their education. This is doubly unfortunate because there are many weird college scholarships these students probably qualify for but are unaware of. If you or someone you love wants to go to college in 2012, think outside the box to find weird scholarships 2012.

Patrick Kerr Skateboarding Scholarships

High school seniors who enjoy skateboarding might qualify for weird college scholarships. The Patrick Kerr Skateboarding Scholarship is a scholarship given by mothers of skateboarders; the sponsors believe that students who skateboard show unusual creativity and potential. Up to four students will qualify for these weird scholarships 2012, which are worth $5,000.

In addition to loving skateboarding, students must have a GPA of at least 2.5 and plan to attend either a two-year or four-year college in the fall of 2012. Students must write an essay about how skateboarding has positively affected their lives. Students can also submit information about how they promote skateboarding in their local communities.

Culinary Institute of America

The Culinary Institute of America offers an annual scholarship of $25,000 to the student who bakes the best apple pie. This scholarship is specific to the Culinary Institute of America; students must be planning to enroll there in the fall. These weird college scholarships are given every year to aspiring chefs.

The application for this scholarship is two-fold. First, students must fill out an application form that includes a recipe and picture of the finished pie. Recipes should be original rather than copied out of a cookbook or from a web site. Students must also submit a 500-word essay about apples and an application to the Culinary Institute of America, including a high school transcript.

The top ten finalists for these weird scholarships 2012 will be invited to the Culinary Institute of America’s campus in Hyde Park for a baking contest judged by teachers at the school. All ten will receive scholarships; the top three pie bakers get scholarships of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 respectively and the rest will get smaller scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $7,500.

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY)

Student athletes who like to drink milk might qualify for weird college scholarships based on their ability to sport a milk mustache. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.2, participate in sports during the 2011-12 school year, and not get suspended from school or face other serious disciplinary action any time during the school year. This scholarship opportunity is only available to high school seniors.

2012 Weird scholarships

These weird scholarships 2012 require students to fill out an application form online by March 9, 2012. In addition to sharing their personal and academic information, students must write a short essay about how drinking milk helps them improve their athletic and academic performance. Students go through several rounds of judging and may have to submit additional information if selected as semi-finalists or finalists. Applicants who make it to the final round must submit a 2 minute video about how drinking milk helps improve their performance. Two winners will each receive a scholarship of $7,500.

High school seniors shouldn’t let the high price tag of a college education deter them from going on to college. There are more than enough weird scholarships out there; students should think about what qualities, characteristics and interests make them unique and search for scholarships based on those characteristics.

Some seniors take out student loans, while other students put off going to college because of the high price tag. However, none of this is necessary. There are all sorts of weird scholarships for high school seniors available. Most of the time, seniors don’t apply for these scholarships because they don’t know they exist. With a little bit of creativity and some Internet research skills, high school seniors should be able to afford a college education without going deeply into debt.

Weird Last Names

There are some weird scholarships available for students who have unusual last names. Since there are an infinite number of last names in America, it can’t hurt students to search for their name in Google. There may be weird scholarships for high school seniors that bear the student’s name, even if nobody in the family is aware of it.

These scholarships are usually in memory of somebody with that last name; they are generally school-specific, meaning that you have to go to the school that offers the scholarship in order to take advantage of it. North Carolina State University, for example, offers a scholarship to students whose last names are Gatling or Gatlin. There is one name-based scholarship that allows students to attend the university of their choice. If your last name is Valkenburg, you may be eligible for this scholarship.

Weird Heights

There are some weird scholarships for high school seniors based on their height. Students who are unusually short or tall may qualify for these scholarships. Boys who are more than 6’2″ tall and girls who are more than 5’10″ tall may qualify for a scholarship from the Tall Clubs International. The Little People of America (LPA) organization offers scholarships to seniors of both sexes who are less than 4’11″ tall. Students must belong to LPA to take advantage of these scholarships.

Dietary Choices

Both vegetarians and meat lovers may qualify for weird scholarships. The Vegetarian Resource Group offers $5,000 each year to two high school seniors who write an essay about their efforts to promote vegetarianism. The American National Cattlewomen Foundation offers a scholarship of $1,000 to students who promote the eating of beef .

Artistic Scholarships

There are weird scholarships for high school seniors who are interested in certain types of arts and crafts. The National Make It Yourself With Wool scholarship offers between $1,000 and $2,000 to students who knit. Students have to submit a knitted project to be eligible for this scholarship. Students who are musically inclined and enjoy composing or playing a subset of New Age music called space music may also be eligible for scholarships. Students’ compositions must evoke love for outer space. Finally, students who make their prom outfits completely out of duct tape may be eligible for a scholarship of up to $5,000 from Duck Brand Duct Tape.

High school seniors needn’t panic about the high cost of a college education. There are many weird scholarships available to help them go to school without having to take out loans.

Many people take out student loans or don’t go to college at all because of the astronomically high cost of college tuition. This is unfortunate because there are many unusual or weird scholarships that students don’t take advantage of.

Scholarships are often thought of as awards for the smartest or most athletic students, and this is true of some scholarships. However, almost anybody can get a scholarship. Women are especially able to get scholarships once they learn where to look, as there are many weird scholarships for girls.

Weird Scholarships for Twin Girls

Girls who are twins may be able to get a hefty discount on their college education. Many schools offer weird scholarships for girls who are twins. For example, Sterling College in Kansas and Morris Brown College in Georgia both offer discounts on college tuition if both girls attend the college. Sterling College offers a 50 percent discount to both girls, while Morris Brown College offers a 50 percent discount to one of the twins while requiring the other twin to pay full price. Some schools, such as Lake Erie College in Pennsylvania, offers a scholarship to each twin in alternating years, which is equivalent to the 50 percent discount that Sterling College offers.

Non-Athletic Girls

Traditionally, athletic girls receive scholarships while non-athletic girls do not. However, there are some weird scholarships for girls that reward non-athletic girls. One such scholarship is the Gertrude J Deppen Scholarship at Bucknell University. This weird scholarship for girls who don’t play sports also requires the girls to abstain from smoking and drinking. It is only available to students who plan to attend Bucknell University. Girls must have lived in Mount Carmel for at least 10 years and graduated from Mount Carmel High School to qualify for this scholarship.

Scholarships Based on Height

Girls who are unusually tall or unusually short may qualify for weird scholarships. The Little People of America Association offers scholarships to girls who are less than 4’10″ tall. Girls who are taller may also qualify for this scholarship if they have a sister who is short enough to be classified as a dwarf. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Tall Clubs International Scholarship offers funds to girls who are greater than 5’10″ in height. This weird scholarship requires tall girls to write an essay about their experiences as an unusually tall female.

Scholarships Based on Lifestyle

There are several weird scholarships for girls based on the lifestyle they lead. In addition to the Gertrude J Deppen Scholarship mentioned earlier, some girls may qualify for the Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship. This scholarship awards $10,000 to a girl who leads a vegetarian lifestyle.

Girls who attend college at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC may also qualify for a scholarship based on their lifestyle. The Alice McArver Ratchford Scholarship is awarded only to girls who are single and have never been married before. The girls must live on campus and not own a vehicle to qualify.

There are many weird scholarships for girls available, but very few of them get claimed because most girls are unaware that the scholarships exist. Girls should think about what qualities make them unique and search online to see if there’s a scholarship for women with these qualities. In many cases, traits girls possess that seem insignificant can be the key to paying for their college education.
